Charleston Area Medical Center (CAMC) and Charleston Radiation Therapy Consultants are working with Alliance Oncology, a division of Alliance HealthCare Services, to establish a department of radiation therapy at the CAMC Cancer Center.

The CAMC Cancer Center, accredited by the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) and the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer, sees more patients than any other cancer center in the state. Last year more than 20,000 patients visited the center and more than 9,000 chemotherapy treatments were administered.

“CAMC is pleased to be working with Alliance Oncology. This relationship will enable us to expand our oncology service offering and further improve the health of the communities we serve,” said David L. Ramsey, President and CEO of CAMC Health System, Inc. “Alliance brings innovative radiation therapy technologies and national expertise to our community; helping CAMC to deliver high quality of care, close to home.”

To initiate work on the new radiation therapy department, CAMC and Alliance Oncology have officially filed an application for a Certificate of Need. The new department will replace two of the existing linear accelerators owned by Charleston Radiation Therapy Consultants with new state-of-the-art linear accelerators. These machines will provide comprehensive radiation oncology services, including radiation therapy, radiosurgery for both brain and body treatments, and brachytherapy.

“We are excited to embark upon this new opportunity in West Virginia with Charleston Area Medical Center and look forward to developing the area’s most advanced cancer care program at the CAMC Cancer Center,” says Gregory E. Spurlock, President of Alliance Oncology. “We are proud to support CAMC in providing high quality care for the Charleston community, as well as providing services to the surrounding communities, which do not have cutting-edge radiation therapy treatments currently available.”

Alliance Oncology, an industry leader in radiation oncology center development, partners directly with hospitals, radiation oncologists and other healthcare providers to establish, upgrade, and operate radiation therapy programs. Providing a full range of service line capabilities (inpatient & outpatient), Alliance Oncology’s fully integrated, comprehensive approach to cancer care affords its partners the speed-to-market, quality clinical outcomes, and operational expertise that sets them apart from the competition.

According to Tom Tomlinson, Chief Executive Officer and President of Alliance HealthCare Services: “Joining forces with CAMC is a great example of our growth strategy, which is focused on partnering with hospitals and health systems to enhance their oncology services. It is also clear evidence that the strategic investments we’ve made this year to expand our resources have begun to bear fruit, and better position Alliance Oncology to execute on large system opportunities like this.”
