Rovi Introduces Personalized Discovery Solution in Europe
Rovi Corporation (NASDAQ:ROVI) today announced the European rollout of Rovi Personalized Discovery Solution, a suite of services designed to increase content consumption and delight consumers with a dynamic discovery experience that may be tailored to the needs and tastes of the individual viewer. The new Personalized Discovery Solution includes a predictive search and recommendations engine, conversational interface technologies and Rovi’s leading database of international entertainment information, editorial and images. Rovi plans to showcase the solution at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC) taking place in Amsterdam, September 12-16 (Hall 5, Stand A31).
“There is a usability gap forming as traditional TV navigation systems struggle to keep pace with an evolving entertainment landscape characterized by multiscreen access and a near infinite amount of content choices for consumers,” said Daren Gill, product vice president, Rovi. “With Rovi Personalized Discovery Solution, we are providing the technologies and services needed to help our customers bridge this delta and define a new discovery paradigm that delights subscribers with fast and relevant search results and recommendations. In addition to fueling subscriber satisfaction and retention, Rovi Personalized Discovery Solution is designed to increase key performance metrics of media and entertainment businesses.”
The predictive prowess of Rovi Search and Recommendations Services is achieved through analyzing past viewing behaviors and preferences, as well as a deep understanding of entertainment within a real-world context. Unlike traditional search and recommendations services, Rovi combines its entertainment metadata handcrafted by a team of professional Rovi editors with a dynamic Knowledge Graph that maintains semantic, real-time information on more than 100 million entertainment-related entities (i.e., program titles, celebrity names, brands, locations and other relevant elements). This blend enables Rovi to anticipate what a user wants next by applying a range of contextual relevance filters that take into consideration the time of day, day of week and location. The system can also account for market trends by tracking the importance and popularity of people and entertainment, as well as the relationships between them, at any given moment.
Rovi Personalized Discovery Solution also includes Rovi Conversation Services that allow users to search and discover content using naturally spoken language. Built on knowledge graph-based semantic technologies, Rovi Conversation Services create intuitive ways for consumers to discover and access huge libraries of programming, bringing a next-generation user experience to television and video applications. Speech-driven interfaces typically use speech-to-text conversion, which maps to a menu or keywords for navigation. In contrast, conversational interfaces advance that experience by allowing consumers to ask questions and have a natural back-and-forth dialog in order to find the content that interests them in much the same way they would interact with another individual.
Rovi plans to host live demonstrations of a complete range of services for media and entertainment businesses at IBC 2014 (Hall 5, Stand A31). Visitors to the show may also see Rovi Conversation Services integrated into an innovative remote control with built-in microphone that is being showcased by Universal Electronics. The same demonstration is also being hosted by Universal Electronics at Hall 1, Stand C41.
At IBC, Rovi will also be previewing a new data and analytics tool for Rovi Search and Recommendations Services that is designed to provide customers actionable insights based on viewing behaviors and patterns. The Rovi Discovery Optimization Manager is expected to provide the consumption metrics needed for service providers to report performance, inform content promotions, and further customize offerings to meet specific business requirements.
