The fourth annual Aliyun Worldwide Developer Conference (AWDC) hosted by Alibaba Cloud Computing (AliCloud) concluded today and attracted more than 10,000 developers and partners from around the world for wide-ranging discussions focused on cloud security, cloud computing platforms, cloud migration and applications. The event also provided opportunities for attending third-party developers to connect with venture capitalists to pursue funding.

AWDC is the largest annual cloud computing event in China attracting international corporations and overseas developers including Rovio, ChinaSoft, China Software Development Net, Face++, Philips, Quixey and Schneider.

Key highlights included:

  • Shanghai Jiankang Bao shared its pioneering “health in cloud” project in monitoring and analyzing data on the health conditions of different family members.
  • Developers from consumer electronics company Philips shared their experience in cloud services adoption as a multinational corporation, and announced the upcoming launch of a new smartphone model that will be powered by YunOS.

  • Smart wearable electric skates ACTON Rocket Skates and DJI’s Phantom 2 Vision flying camera were available for participants to test trial.

Apart from private companies, China’s public sector is also active in utilizing cloud computing. In addition to the cloud computing and big data strategic framework agreement signed between the Guizhou provincial government and AliCloud, the municipal government of Haidian district in Beijing is working with AliCloud to build a cloud-based platform to increase its capacity and efficiency in delivering public administration services such as education and vocational training, marriage and child adoption application, tax payments, social security registration and identity card registration. He Jianwu, director from the Commission of Economy and Information of Haidian District in Beijing shared his thoughts about the future of a “smart” Haidian district.

During the keynote speech, Alibaba Group’s Chief Technology Officer, Wang Jian, expressed, “Cloud computing puts small businesses on the same playing field as big corporations, providing them with the same access and capacity to build lasting and sustainable companies. Cloud computing also allows traditional businesses the opportunity to be as creative and innovative as technology companies.”

Yu Jiawen, the 23-year-old founder of the “Myfriday” app, said that Alibaba’s cloud computing services provided flexibility on the usage of IT resources, which allowed start-ups like his to reduce unnecessary costs. The Myfriday app, whose user base increases by about an average of 1,000 per hour, provides useful tools and social network platforms for university students to access class timetables, recommend courses to users based on their preferences and share resources.

“Going forward, AliCloud will focus on improving the user and product experience and building the platform and cloud computing infrastructure using world-class technology to support millions of users. AliCloud will work closely with developers to create a win-win cloud computing ecosystem,” said Ben Wang, President of AliCloud.
