The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles launched an enhancement to the popular Motor Vehicle Registration Renewal online application conveniently offering online renewals to more people in Sarpy and Douglas Counties.

The enhancement allows individuals to upload a document or a picture of their insurance card if the renewal system is unable to verify their current insurance. The image is then submitted to the Treasurer’s office for review and approval, in one simple transaction.

“We are really excited to open up this enhancement to thousands of individuals that want to take their DMV business online, and make it as easy and seamless as possible. The upload process makes it easier than ever. We appreciate assistance from the Douglas and Sarpy County Treasurers with the initial launch, and look forward to expanding this service to more counties across Nebraska,” said Rhonda Lahm, Director of the Department of Motor Vehicles. The DMV plans on offering this feature to other Nebraska county treasurers after a short pilot period.

Currently, insurance companies report insurance policies electronically to the DMV two times a month making the registration renewal online possible, but not all insurance companies are required to report electronically due to certain exceptions. This, as well as a few other circumstances, can cause some Nebraskans to make an unnecessary visit to their local county treasurer, or to mail the renewal with proof of insurance before they can renew their vehicle registration.

Counties that opt to participate will need to commit to monitoring the system for proof of insurance renewals and turn around the review of them quickly. “The expectation is that online renewals requiring proof of insurance are processed by the next working day; so the renewal stickers can be in the mail just as quickly as they are today. If you have ever gone through the online process, you know how efficient it is. Our goal is to continue to improve service to the citizens,” added Rhonda.

There are over 400,000 vehicles that need their motor vehicle registration renewed each year in Douglas County. Individuals can do so online, through the mail, by phone, or use the drop box. “We are always looking for ways to make it easier for individuals to renew. This enhancement to the online system is just another step we are taking towards achieving that goal. We strongly encourage the online renewal option,” said John Ewing, Douglas County Treasurer.

Sarpy and Douglas Counties volunteered to pilot the new feature online understanding that citizens expect interaction with state government to be as efficient as possible. Rich James, the Sarpy County Treasurer had this to say about the program, “This enhancement is a great opportunity to lower the volume of people that need to visit a county office, making lines shorter for those who actually need to visit in person. We are happy to help the DMV pilot the program.”

The online option is provided by Nebraska Interactive, LLC contracted by the Nebraska State Records Board (NSRB) to provide online services for Nebraska government agencies, including the State’s portal (http://www.nebraska.gov). The Nebraska.gov total includes either a 3 percent credit card fee or $3 electronic check fee, which is incurred by Nebraska Interactive to cover the operating costs.
