Wells Fargo (NYSE:WFC) and the Military Warriors Support Foundation will help Marine veteran Lance Corporal Nino Ray Capanang (KAP-uh-ning) realize his goal of homeownership when his family is presented keys to a mortgage-free home. LCpl Capanang, his wife Emilie and their three children will open the doors to their new home this afternoon during a special ceremony in the Silverado Ranch community, a suburb of Las Vegas, Nevada. The ceremony takes place as the Mortgage Bankers Association convenes for its annual conference and expo.

“This is one of our main goals in life, to own a home, and now that it’s taken care of we can focus more on medical treatments and personal goals for me and my family,” LCpl Capanang said when he learned about the donation. “Thank you for giving us a place we can call our home and live comfortably.”

Patriotism motivated LCpl Capanang to join the U.S. Marine Corps in 2005. He was deployed to Iraq and served as a rifleman. Within four months of arriving, during combat he was hit by gunfire and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in action. Now medically discharged from the military, he and his family spend time finding adventure and enjoying water sports. He plans to go back to school to pursue his passion for art in digital photography and travel with his family.

Wells Fargo and the Military Warriors Support Foundation (MWSF) are committed to helping veterans, like LCpl Capanang, transition back to civilian life. For his service and sacrifice, MWSF selected him to receive a mortgage-free home through the Homes 4 Wounded Heroes program and donated by Wells Fargo. In addition to the home, Wells Fargo will provide $20,000 for three years of financial counseling required by MWSF as part of his transition to become a homeowner.

“We are honored to join Military Warriors Support Foundation in helping LCpl Capanang achieve his goal of homeownership and we thank him for the sacrifice he made for our country,” said Michael DeVito, Executive Vice President, Wells Fargo Home Mortgage. “Wells Fargo is highly committed to helping veterans and active-duty service members reach their financial goals. Donating homes is one of the many ways we demonstrate that dedication.”

In 2012, the same year Wells Fargo and the Military Warriors Support Foundation began working together, Wells Fargo’s Military Affairs program pledged $35 million over a three-year period to assist service members and veterans with sustainable housing, career transition and customized financial education. Thirty million dollars of that pledge is earmarked for home donations. From January 2013 to Sept. 30, 2014, Wells Fargo has donated 162 properties as part of that commitment.

“Like many Americans, our heroes have a desire to own a home but with the battle injuries they have, there can be obstacles to making that a reality,” said Lt. Gen. Leroy Sisco, founder and CEO, Military Warriors Support Foundation. “These homes help to fill a significant need for veteran housing, but it would not be possible without the support of great partners like Wells Fargo. Presenting these homes to veterans lets them know that people do care.”

Wells Fargo is one of several lenders that will be recognized for their efforts to assist veterans and active-duty service members at the Mortgage Bankers Association’s Hall of Honor program during the convention on Tuesday, Oct. 21. The companies will be awarded for military support in three categories: financial counseling, employment opportunities and homeownership.
